How It All Began
Starting a Bible college was the last thing Andrew Wommack ever thought he would do. It’s not that he was opposed to a Bible college; it’s just that he had seen so many Bible college graduates become embarrassments to the kingdom of God. He didn’t want to have his name associated with a college that hadn’t properly prepared its students for ministry, and was convinced that academics alone wouldn’t get the job done.
However, the Lord had imprinted 2 Timothy 2:2 on Andrew’s heart. Paul was writing to Timothy and told him to take the things that he had learned and commit them to faithful men who would be able to teach others. Andrew felt frustrated in his attempts to accomplish this until 1993 when the Lord showed him a groundbreaking way to conduct a Bible college that would do more than just impart knowledge. This college would prepare men and women for ministry with a unique blend of the teaching of God’s Word and practical “on-the-job” training.
Andrew gathered together a great teaching staff that shared his vision, and Charis Bible College (originally Colorado Bible College) opened in 1994, graduating its first class of 33 in 1996. Now, there are over five hundred students attending its Colorado campus and over eight hundred more attending via Online and Correspondence classes! The vision to train others didn’t just stop with Charis Bible College of Colorado. In 1997, Charis Bible College-U.K. was founded in South Chard, England, and is presently located in Walsall. Since then, schools have been started in Russia, Northern Ireland, Belize, India, The Netherlands, S. Africa, Argentina, Switzerland and Poland. The first U.S. extension school opened in Chicago, IL, in 2003. Its success spurred the establishment of schools in Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX; Jacksonville, FL; Gardner & Plymouth, MA; Dyer, IN, Phoenix, AZ; San Jose, CA; Raleigh-Durham, NC and Kansas City, MO.
